Persistence pays OFF

Waking up in the morning was always hard for me. Ever since I was a little kid my mom would be constantly yelling at me to wake up. I used to hide under the blankets and tell my mom I was looking for my socks and would go back to sleep. My laziness carried on into my teenage years, I was always in trouble for being late in high school, it was like pulling teeth to get me out of bed. As a young adult I was always getting fired for coming in late or missing days at work. It was like I had no self control.

Finally something clicked and I learned about sacrifice. I was working for a crappy agency but the job I was assigned to was really laid back. I would see the guys that actually worked for the company making good money, driving nice cars, and relaxing it up while I was stuck working outside. One day I made it my goal to come into work on time, never miss days, be a great worker, and get hired on directly to that company. 10 months later I accomplished that goal and I’ve been with that company for 6 years making a decent living.

It wasn’t easy but I was persistent and it it paid off. I did the same with poker and I had a similar result. I was successful at tournament poker because I realized that if you had a solid strategy and a decent bankroll to withstand the variance, you could make money if you kept coming back and playing day after day win or lose. Persistence is key.

This week reminds me of those early days. I had a tough go at the virtual tables. It’s been hard to find tournaments for the stakes I want to play running on my favorite site so I’ve been jumping around to different sites, trying to find good games. Early in the week, I was playing some micro stakes and didn’t have any success. I managed to find some higher buy-in games later on in the week, but getting used to the players, structures, and software does have a learning curve.

This week I ran and played horrible, thank god I was playing mostly micro stakes. I played 8 tournaments/sngs and min cashed in 1 for -$127. I was feeling kind of bummed out because leading up the final week before the WSOP I was playing and running bad. I felt like I should be crushing the game especially at the lower stakes but that totally wasn’t the case. I was playing very fast, losing focus, making bad hero calls, pretty much playing the worst I’ve played since I started writing again.

I didn’t give up though, I stayed persistent. I knew that if I played my game and ran my strategies against my opponents success was inevitable. Saturday I hit my local Casino and late registered a $65 buy-in 86 player tournament where 1st place is a Colossus seat and $600 spending cash. Right away I was seated at a table with some drunk crazy guy that was playing any two. I doubled up against him with A-K vs his 6-4 all in preflop and few hands later busted him with A-J vs his 2-5. After that I opened up and started playing my game, picking up pots with little to no resistance.

I cruised through the middle stages, and I was never really in trouble until around 22 players left. I was card dead and I began to get short, so I started to shove in spots, to pick up chips to keep me alive. In one key hand, it was folded around to me on the button, and I shoved my 10 big blind stack with A-10. The small blind folded and the big blind quickly called, turning over A-J. Luckily I hit a 10 on the flop, and doubled up. This give me a decent chipstack that allowed me to accumulate chips again, get through the bubble, and make the final table.

At the final table I started 8 out of 10 in chips, but the structure was pretty good, so I knew I wasn’t in trouble. I maneuvered my chip stack nicely, and kept moving up the pay ladder. I had a couple chances to build a monster chip stack, but I lost a flip with my A-Q vs J-J and another with A-K vs 7-7. You have to win these type of hands to win tournaments, I kept losing the big pots, but winning enough small pots to stay alive. Finally 4 handed my 3 remaining opponents played a pot where pretty much all the chips got in the middle, and the board read 4-10-6-10-2, one guy had 10-J, the other had 10-8, and the winner held 4-4.

Talk about a cooler. One guy was out, the other was crippled, and the chip leader had about 70% of the chips in play. I busted the crippled player with K-J vs K-10 a few hands later, and started playing heads up against my opponent with 20% of the chips. I could never get anything going and keep getting re-raised all in, so I started shoving hoping to double up and get some chips to make some moves with. Unfortunately, I shoved with K-7, and my opponent woke up with pocket 10’s, and they held. I was a little bummed out, but not that much. I played a great game, I made 2nd, and won $805 in a little over 5 and half hours of play.

Overall I finished the week up $613 profit, a good way to enter the final week of my preparation before the WSOP. My successful week wouldn’t of came without persistence. I wanted to give up and take the rest of the week off when I was playing bad, but I kept playing, and hit a nice score. You can too, just be persistent, put in the hard work, and I promise it will pay off.

So till next time, good luck out there.

Jermain the DONKEY

I suck. Well not really, I’m kind of running bad and this new super aggressive style that I’m playing is causing me to swing more wildly. I’m not going to make excuses for myself, losing has made me play like an idiot and I’ve resorted to making desperate plays at times.

image

Thank god for freerolls because I’m currently in 9 tournament losing streak, luckily I’ve stuck to a strict bankroll management plan and I’ve entered plenty of freerolls. I’ve lost 4 mbtc this week bringing my bankroll 31 mbtc. This is my first losing week since I made my 10 buy-in deposit after going bust a month ago. I’ve got to remain positive, poker is like climbing a mountain sometimes you have to descend for a bit in order to reach the top. There is plenty of peaks and valleys on this road we travel and what makes a pro is how you handle yourself during trying times.

image

Don’t give up keep climbing

When running bad and going though losing streaks go out, have fun, visit friends and family. Don’t let the eventual downswings get you down, get away from poker clear your mind and remember there’s a beautiful world out there.

Good luck at the tables.

Turning the CORNER

I’ve always promoted playing a tight aggressive style but lately I’ve been deploying an extremely loose aggressive style. I’ve been playing position making raises and reraises with any two cards and the second I sense weakness in my opponents I usually move in on them. This style is extremely dangerous and I do not suggest playing or using it unless your very confident in you’re reading abilities. This style is very high risk, very high reward….

Totally what my style consists of

I’ve played 8 tournaments this week, I had two 1st place finishes, I REPEAT TWO 1ST PLACE FINISHES both in a 66 player 6max tournament format and I final tabled the Donkdown Freeroll for an 8th place finish out of 206 players. What an amazing week!!! I almost doubled my bankroll increasing it to 35 mbtc. I owe all this this success to a lil tweak I’ve discovered while talking to a friend. A non-poker playing friend of all people! I was telling my her I was struggling finishing out tournaments and that I wasn’t a big winner. She said that I should go all out, that I wasn’t winning so what did I have to lose? I thought she was crazy at first, but as I went home I thought to myself it’s worth a shot. I had some success years ago playing a super aggressive position playing style and I can’t remember having better time at the tables raising and reraising my opponents into submission.

My opponents

On Wednesday I played the Donkdown freeroll my first tournament using this style and right away it showed success. I raised almost every hand in position with anything and made huge reraises when I had the best hand. Putting players constantly to the test confuses them and forces them to make big decisions for their tournament life, and usually they make the wrong move. I coasted into the money and finished 8th out of 203 players easily where last week I struggled to reach 11th place.

Big BTC freeroll every Wednesday!!!

The very next day I jumped into a 66 player 6max tournament and practically ran over the field. I made the final table 1st in chips and only gave up the lead for two hands when we were 3 handed. I started heads up play with an 8 to 1 advantage in chips but quickly saw a portion disappear after two quick double ups and losing a couple small pots to my ballsy opponent. The final hand came with me on the button, I raised with Q-2 and my opponent called the flop came 2-5-10 and I made a continuation bet, my opponent called. The turn was a 4 putting a flush and straight draw out on the board, I bet once again and my opponent quickly called. The river was an 8 and I didn’t know what to do, I tanked and bet the minimum, immediately my opponent moved all in. I thought for while and convinced myself he was bluffing. I made the call and sure enough he had J-3 for the missed straight and my duces where good!

image

I totally did the Hevad Khan after winning in that fashion

Two days passed and I played a few tournaments but with this style you either run deep or get eliminated in a quick fiery fashion, so I was busted fairly quickly in the tournaments I played after my victory. Then yesterday happened, I woke up early and jumped into an other 66 player 6max tournament and from the get go I started running over my table! I played almost perfect poker and came into the final table with a dominating chip lead, I eliminated 5/6 of the players and easily won my heads up battle all while driving to play a live tournament at Pechanga Resort and Casino! (Don’t try this at home kids!)

image

Check out these 1st place stats!

All I can say is don’t be afraid to try different things, it’s insane to do the same thing over and over and expect a different result.

Good luck out there.

Focus on the PRIZE

Poker is just one long session. Make the right decision and in the long run you’ll show a profit, let the cards the fall where they may. You cant control the outcome of the cards, all you can control is how you play the cards you’re dealt. It’s a pretty simple way to live by, the hard part is retaining your focus and discipline in high pressure situations and times of great despair when all seems lost……But never give up, I fucken repeat never give up. Ever.

image

I didn’t have a great week money wise, I didn’t lose Bitcoin I showed a small profit. 3 cashes and 2 final tables out 7 tournaments in fields of 42-228 players increasing my bankroll by 23% bringing my total bankroll 18 mbtc. These fields on sealswithclubs.eu are pretty soft and playing a tight aggressive style is slowly showing a profit, I just make sure to avoid trouble hands and never give up!!

image

My first cash was a 8th place finish of 66 players, it was a min cash that I would of never got if I would of gave up when I lost half my stack early but my style doesn’t consist of throwing the towel in when times get tough or extremely difficult. My second cash was in a 11th place finish in a 228 player Donkdown freeroll that I had no business cashing in. I made the top 40 and the money with 5 big blinds and slowly grinded my way to an 11th the place finish while never having more than 10bbs to play with in the whole tournament! It wasn’t a huge cash but by far one of my most patient and disciplined tournament’s I’ve ever played.

image

My last cash of the week was a 5th place finish out of 42 runners. I played a tight game and got extremely lucky on the bubble to get to the money. With 5 of us left I was sitting on the short stack 6,300 at 400/800 $50 ante, action was folded around to me in the small blind I have J-9 of clubs and I called. The big blind who was second in chips doubles the bet and I call leaving me with 4700, the flop comes 9-2-4 I check and he bets 2400. I pause and check raise all in, he snap calls and shows J-J. Lol I’m not perfect.

image

Just remember to tell yourself during hectic stages in a tournament/cash games or life in general to never give up!

Good luck out there.

Live action at PECHANGA

My in town poker room closed down last November, now I’m without a home. I’ve been trying local cardrooms, but it’s hard finding that place your comfortable in. I feel like my game has been suffering due to the lack of stability but I think I’ve found a solution at Pechanga Resort and Casino. It’s right off the 15 Fwy in the beautiful city of Temecula C.A and boasts one of the biggest poker rooms in California. It’s a 40 minute drive from my home, the closest of all the nearby rooms and I best thing is I happen to work close by.

image

Hands down one of the most beautiful casinos in California

Sunday’s they run a pretty sweet tournament. It starts at 11am, it’s a $45 buy-in, 20 minute levels, $5000 starting stack and 5k guarantee. I’ve looked around for guarantees and buy-ins similar to that amount, and for that you’re going to have to drop at least $100. So yesterday I made my way down to check it out. To say the least I was very impressed.

image

Even Will was Impressed

I roll up to a giant poker room full of players, 200 phony up $45 and play starts sharply at 11am. I play my tight early level game for a while till I pick up K-K and make a raise…everyone folds. A few levels pass and I get bored so I raise in late position with 8-2 off suit lol I get called by an older man and he checks in the dark from the small blind. I lead out on the flop and turn as he checks loudly and pounds the table. Finally on the river I slow down and check behind and he shows the flopped two pair.

image

I almost fell into the old man’s trap!

I lost almost half my stack after my failed bluff attempt so I tighten up till I  get A-A vs. A-10 and double up. I few hands later double up again with a flush so I’m sitting pretty. So I think..about an hour passes three levels go by and I go completely card dead and my 25,000 drops down to 13,000 and on top of it my table gets broken, so I’m sitting at 13bbs and table full of monster stacks raising and reraising each other, then this hand comes up.

image

23,000ish my high point

With the blinds at $500/$1000 $100 Ante I look down at two beautiful Queens. I take my time pause, contemplate, and explore my options… “Should I raise?” Definitely! “Should I call?” No “Should move all in?” Yes I only had 13k and I felt like applying maximum pressure would give me the best chance to win the blinds and antes. The player next to act after me tanks for a few seconds and moves in for 22k, action folds to the player on the button who quickly moves all in for 40k. The player to my left turns over A-Q and the button turns over K-K leaving me with one out. A-Q and I miss and the button takes down a massive pot, leaving me with a 45th place finish out of 200.

No!!!!! Not the cooler!!!!!

I was pretty much crushed by the cooler but I sucked it up and took it in stride. Overall I played a great tournament and just couldn’t go on that sick run that it takes to win one of these. 1st place paid $1,801 so you’ll definitely see me playing this event again, hopefully with different results…..Till next time I wish you all good luck and don’t get coolered!!!!

My bankroll vs. Online POKER

Online poker. Once a click of a mouse away for Americans, now just a distant memory. I used to play on Pokerstars, it was fun playing in my underwear. Now with the DOJ shutting down online poker in the USA except for a few states, players have to go to other means. Enter Bitcoin. Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer payment system and digital currency introduced as open source software in 2009 by pseudonymous developer Satoshi Nakamoto.

image

I’ve been playing poker for bitcoin on a website called sealswithclubs.eu with some success. They run a ton of freerolls, have weak fields, and they have speedy withdraws and deposits. When I first started playing a made a $50 BTC deposit and almost immediately I doubled it playing tournaments and cash games. I  withdrew half and stored it in a digital wallet and continued playing. I few weeks ago I went on tilt and lost my online bankroll…

image

Two days ago I withdrew 10 mbtc from my digital wallet and placed it in my sealswithclubs account. I’ve played 6 tournaments and I’ve made 3 final tables. First it was a 6th place finish where I flopped 2 pair and and got it all in vs. the chipleader’s top pair and he got lucky and rivered a higher 2 pair. The second was a 2nd place finish where I lost a big pot heads up with K-Q vs. A-J (very dumb) but won a nice amount of BTC & the last one was a 4th place finish where I lost my last 10bbs with A-8 vs. K-6 but played a well balanced tournament.

Overall I increased my bankroll to 15 mbtc and I was impressed with my game. 3 final tables in fields of 18-66 players boosts my confidence. I know if I don’t go on tilt continue playing a tight aggressive game in these low buy-in tournaments I’ll continue showing a profit. I feel playing online definitely is helping my game and I suggest it for anyone looking to take there game to a different level.

Good luck at the tables whether in real life or online in your boxers. Oh yeah happy Green Friday.

Poker The Game WE LOVE

Hello everybody I’m starting this blog to talk about MY personal experience of living the life of a low limit player. I play Texas hold um a variant of poker that is extremely popular in casinos, television, and online. I have a regular paying job that pays the bills but I play poker for a part-time income. I study every day and work hard to improve my poker game. I watch training videos, listen to podcasts, take online poker courses and play regularly at my local casino Soboba all with the goal of one day being able to quit my job and become a full-time professional poker player.

We can dream right?! Truth is I like my job and I enjoy not having to worry about how am I going to pay my bills, plus I’m not that great of a player. Don’t get me wrong I’ve been playing for 8 years and I’ve had some success in low limit tournaments but nothing I can hang my hat on. Lately I’ve been playing 1/3 no limit holdem and having some great results. I play a tight aggressive game, ABC poker and I’ve been raking it in at these low limits for hundreds of dollars in a few hours.

I’ve had lucky streaks before but this one is different my game has evolved into bet for value, play position, don’t bluff, and never tilt mode! I’m very happy with my results and I owe it all to my dedication to improving my game as its helped me feel more comfortable when making Big decisions. So I’m starting this blog to basically keep a record and share my thoughts and hands with all you people out there that play poker… the game WE LOVE.
